PCEA Saving & Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO)

Unlike in the bank loaning system, the Sacco loans are advanced by the Sacco without collateral. Instead of collateral, the loans are advanced with the support/commitment of other members of the society who become guarantors to the loans.

The By-law provides that Sacco Loans security is the guarantor’s savings. Therefore, when a member defaults in making payments, the guarantors’ shares are taken by the Sacco to offset the loan balance. support/commitment of other members of the society who become guarantors to the loans.

Background of the Sacco

PCEA Sacco was registered with the Kenya Government in October 1985, as is required under the Kenyan laws, for such societies. This cooperative society is a voluntary association of members from Presbyterian Church of East Africa (PCEA) who wishes to work together to promote their economic interests through pooling of resources together. 

The PCEA members include registered church members, and employees of Church. At the end of 2017 the SACCO had 3,000 members and with shareholding amounting to a total of KSh 10,700,000. The members are widely spread all over Eastern Africa, and abroad where PCEA has its ministry. The head office of the SACCO is located in Nairobi South C, Muhoho Avenue, Jitegemea House.

The loan repayments, as well as the savings, by members are made on a check-off system whereby members authorize the employer to be making monthly deductions from the members’ salaries, and then the employer remits these amounts to the Sacco.
